Digital Concepts Are Becoming the New Footwear Trend Forecasting
The next big footwear trend may be identified before the shoe even exists.
For decades, footwear trend forecasting has relied on runway shows, street style, retail, consumer behavior and cultural shifts to predict what consumers will want next.
But footwear has a timing problem. Shoes are typically designed around a year before they reach stores. Footwear designers aren't designing for what consumers want today—we're trying to predict the footwear trends they'll want a year from now.
Now there's another powerful source of trend intelligence: digital footwear design.
Designers can visualize a shoe, put it in front of consumers and generate a reaction before a physical sample, mold or production order ever exists. Social media is essentially creating a new kind of real-time footwear focus group.
When a Digital Shoe Becomes a Footwear Trend Signal
A perfect example is the viral Nike Air Max Plus TN “Crystalline Bio Capsule” concept, created by digital artists @blackworkben and @solelayers.
The translucent pink concept isn't an official Nike release, yet its aesthetic feels remarkably relevant to current shoe trends. Jelly shoes are trending again, while transparent footwear, clear materials, translucent outsoles and glossy finishes are appearing across fashion.
But what's more interesting than the shoe itself is the reaction to it.
Consumers can now respond to a footwear idea before the product even exists.
Digital Concepts Could Change Footwear Trend Forecasting
Digital concepts give footwear brands something the traditional development calendar makes difficult: real-time consumer reaction.
Digital Concept → Consumer Reaction → Product Opportunity
A concept can be created and shared while a trend is actually happening, making digital footwear design another powerful tool for footwear trend forecasting and product development.
AI and Digital Footwear Design Make Real-Time Design Possible
For footwear designers, this is where it gets exciting. By the time a trend becomes obvious, we're often already designing another season.
Now we can see something happening and say, “Hey, we should have done this.” And with AI footwear design, CAD, 3D rendering and digital visualization, we can actually show what we would have created if we'd had the time or team to do it.
That concept can then be put in front of consumers immediately.
Digital design gives footwear designers the ability to participate in trends in real time—not just predict them a year in advance.
And that could change the future of footwear trend forecasting: instead of only predicting what consumers might want next, we can show them—and see how they respond before the shoe ever reaches a store.
